Antje Schiffers collects the material for her projects in foreign environments and countries: by drawing flowers in Mexico, painting farms in Russia and Kyrgyzstan or as a commissioned artist in German corporations. The encounters, gifts and stories that Schiffers receives in exchange for her paintings and drawings form a body of work that juggles with the perception and reactions of different groups of people.
In the exhibition in Heidelberger Kunstverein, Schiffers has not concentrated on the documentation of a specific journey. Taking a conversation with the director of the Heidelberg based collection for Outsider Art the Sammlung Prinzhorn as a starting point, she leaves her position as an observing traveller. Instead she rather questions her own role as a visual artist. The selection of works in the exhibition allow the visitor to learn something about the artist Antje Schiffers through the round-about way of the gaze of others.
Following the opening, at 8 pm, actors from the Heidelberg theatre will read the one-act play “Die Führung” (The guided tour) by Antje Schiffers and Thomas Sprenger. In the play, managers and chairmen of German middle-sized companies exchange experiences of their daily work routine.
